Use Clip Art for Science Activities

Ice Cream Melting by Solar Heat

Simple but very effective science lessons can be created with clip art. The clip art shown is found on this website:  www.clipartlord.com

The diagram of the Sun and melting ice cream is a great example for phase changes.

When you want students to write a description of something, give them a list of terms that must be used. Science terms can be referred to as Science Language.

Prior to this activity, kids need to be introduced to the science language expected in their description.

freeze- A change from liquid to solid due to a lost of heat.

gravity- A force that pulls everything on Earth toward the center of Earth; force that pulls things down.

heat- Energy transferred from something hot to something not as hot (cooler).

liquid– A state of matter that flows, has a definite volume, and take the shape of its container.

melt– A change from solid to liquid due to a gain of heat.

melting point– The temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid.

physical change– Changes that do not affect the chemical make up of materials, such as a change of state.

solar energy– Energy from the Sun; light energy; heat energy.

solid– A state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume.
